On December 2, 2010, the US Department of Health and Human Services set forth a 10-year agenda for improving the health of the nation. More recently, Sleep Health was added to the list, reflecting a growing awareness that our health depends on our getting an appropriate amount of rest.

Drowsy Driving

In 2008, drowsy driving contributed to 2.7 vehicular accidents per 100 million miles traveled. Objective H-2 sets forth the goal to reduce this number, by 2020, to 2.1 accidents per 100 million miles traveled.

Sleep Apnea Linked to Higher Risk of Car Crashes

Sleep apnea is a medical condition in which people momentarially stop breathing during sleep. According to the National Heart Lung Blood Institute's website , untreated sleep apnea can : Ruth Ellen and colleagues (J Clin Sleep Med 2006;2(2): 193-200) reported that non-commercial drivers with sleep apnea are at a statistically significant increased risk of involvement in motor vehicle crashes, and that successful treatment of sleep apnea improves driver performance.
